On non-optical lens features, the 70-200 is far better, and more similar to the 80-400g. Autofocus is as quick as any of my lenses, and the zoom rate is such that it is easy to zoom from 70mm to 200mm with a quick twist of the wrist. None of that on the 200-500, which has a particularly slow zoom rate that frustrates.

Tamron makes a 70-200 f2.8, model number a001. It goes for about $770 new. You can pick it up for around $570 or so used on KEH. The lens is pretty good optically but it's not a really high performer when it comes to autofocus speed. I always had pretty good luck with it taking sports pics with it as long is the action kept then lens closer to

Hi again folks. So I'm hunting for a 70-200mm f2.8 lens. I'm shopping value for dollar here. For example, the new FL from Nikon is completely not cost effective (prices over $3600 in Canada). The Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR1 is price competitive with the Sigma OS 2.8, and the new Tamron.

Above: Tamron 70-200/2.8 VC (A009) at 200mm, f2.8; 100% crop from center, DX-corner, FX-corner. At 200mm the new Nikon softens just a little in the center (shown at 4mm off axis here) and its predecessor is actually a bit sharper. But looking further away from the optical axis the new Nikon re-establishes its lead over all competitors.

If you’re considering a long lens for the Z system, I’m sure that the Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S and Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S have caught your eye. These are two of the best lenses Nikon has ever made, and (taking teleconverters into account) both are capable of reaching 400mm at an aperture of f/5.6.
